Deli Roll

what is deli roll?

Deli roll is a dish that contains fresh deli wrapped in puff pastry dough and baked until it has a flaky texture. It’s a pretty popular dish in the Jewish world, but anybody can enjoy it.

There are many different varieties of deli roll based on your favorite deli and condiments. You can put together your favorite combination and make it your own.

the Shabbos deli sandwich:

This recipe is like an elevated deli sandwich. It’s perfect for Shabbos or Yom Tov and can be served in a few different ways:

  • As a main dish with soup, salad, or vegetables on the side.
  • As a side dish with chicken or meat as the main.
  • As an appetizer with your favorite dips.

Ingredient List:

  • Puff pastry
  • Deli
  • Egg
  • Sesame seeds

Deli Roll Ingredients

why your deli roll is TOO doughy:

A lot of deli rolls end up being too soggy or doughy. One of the reasons is that the inside isn’t releasing any moisture while it’s baking. This can happen when baking dough with something inside.

A trick I started doing is using a knife to make a few small slices through the dough to give it more “air” inside while it’s baking. This makes a difference and helps the dough cook on the inside as well. The texture will be more pastry-like and won’t have any doughy parts.

You can also cover it and lower the temperature of the oven once you see that the top has browned enough. This will help it continue baking on the inside without getting burnt on the outside.

Make it ahead of time:

This is a great recipe to make in advance because it freezes well. You can make a few of them at a time and freeze a few for later. Make sure to wrap them in parchment paper and then tightly in foil.

When you’re in a pinch and have no time to cook, you can grab one from the freezer and pop it in the oven. You can add steamed vegetables on the side for a healthy and nutritious meal.

Turkey Pastrami

load it up:

You may be surprised that this recipe has so few ingredients. However, we did this because there are so many different variations of deli roll, and not everyone will like the same thing.

You can look at this recipe as the base recipe and add whatever you’d like to it.

Some ideas are:

  • Saute some onions and add them on top of the deli before closing it.
  • Smear your favorite condiments onto the dough before adding the deli. (Mustard, ketchup, BBQ sauce, etc.)
  • Use any kind of deli you like. You can use one kind of deli or lots of different kinds. (Turkey, pastrami, corned beef, etc.)

If you’re on a diet:

Deli roll is delicious but high in calories. Here’s what to do if your family members want you to make it but you’re watching your weight:

You can still enjoy a piece but don’t make it the center of your meal. Have a healthy protein with some vegetables and one piece of deli roll. You can also opt for a healthier deli like smoked turkey breast.

Another option is making a deli sandwich with healthy bread and having a salad on the side. You can put sautéed onions and your favorite condiments in the sandwich. It’s delicious and you won’t have to make two different meals!

Faqs:

How long does deli roll last in the fridge?

Deli roll will last in the fridge for three days. If you know you won’t be serving it within that time frame it’s best to freeze it right away.

How to warm up deli roll?

Warming up deli roll is quick and easy. If you’re in a hurry, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place the deli roll inside uncovered for around 10 minutes. If you have enough time and want the deli roll to be soft then keep it covered and leave it in the oven for around 25 minutes.

How many calories are in deli roll?

Deli roll has a high-calorie count because of the pastry dough. Depending on what you add to the deli roll, a piece has around 150 calories. As mentioned above, if you only have one piece with something healthy on the side your meal won’t be too high in calories.

What kind of puff pastry to use?

There are so many different kinds of puff pastry in the grocery stores and you might not be sure which one to use. This article names Dufour and Pepperidge the two best brands for puff pastry. Although we’ve never used Dufour, we have used Pepperidge and it’s excellent.

That being said there are a lot of other brands that are great as well and will come out delicious. Use what you have or what your local grocery store has. Mazor is another great puff pastry brand.
