Rosh Hashana Menu 2022

This Rosh Hashana Menu 2022 is decadent and delicious, but still reasonably simple to put together. We included a grocery list and recipes so that all you need to do is cook!

Rosh Hashana (Jewish new year) is an important time in the Jewish calendar. It signifies hope and new beginnings and is a joyous time. As with any holiday, the menu is a pretty important and exciting part!
Therefore we prepared a Rosh Hashana menu to help you simplify the process.

The menu includes meat, chicken, sides, a salad, and vegetables. It serves around six to eight people but you can double or pare down the recipes as needed.

As you’ll see this meal plan is for the main course dishes. So add wine, challah, simanim (symbolic foods for Rosh Hashana), desserts, etc. to your grocery list.

Cooking schedule:

You can follow this cooking schedule if you have the time and freezer space. Otherwise, cook whenever you’d like! Foods that can be frozen should be made earlier in the week. Foods that can be refrigerated or are better fresh should be made later in the week.

Grocery List for Rosh hashana menu 2022:

This list is for around six to eight servings. You can adjust the amounts if you are adjusting the serving sizes. At the end of the list you will see a section that is for things you most probably have at home. If you don’t, add them to your list. If you have anything on the rest of the list already you can cross it off.

Fruits & Veggies:

  • 2 pounds of green beans
  • 2 pounds of shredded red cabbage
  • 1 bunch of scallions
  • 4 big gold potatoes
  • 2 shallots
  • 1 bunch of garlic

Non-Perishables:

  • 1 bottle of maple syrup
  • 1 bag of flour
  • 4 jars of carrot baby food
  • 1 bag of walnut halves (optional)
  • 1 bag of pecans
  • 1 bag of dried cranberries
  • 1 bottle of white wine (a small bottle of cooking wine is fine)
  • 1 container of chicken broth
  • 1 bottle of your favorite bbq sauce
  • 1 bag of brown sugar
  • 1 bottle of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 bag of basmati rice
  • 1 container of sesame seeds

Perishables:

  • 4 pounds of chicken capons (1 per person)
  • 4 pounds of baby back ribs
  • 1 carton of eggs
  • 1 pack of frozen puff pastry squares
  • 1 bag of frozen spinach

  • Olive oil

Rosh hashana menu 2022 recipes:


super soft BABY BACK ribs:

Baby back ribs for rosh hashana menu 2022

Ingredients:

  • 4 pounds baby back ribs
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup bbq sauce

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
  2. Make the spice rub by adding salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder to a small bowl.
  3. Place the ribs in a deep baking dish and rub the spices into them well.
  4. Pour the bbq sauce over the ribs and rub it into the ribs.
  5. Cover and bake for around eight hours or until they are as soft as you’d like.


Spinach & white wine capons:

White wine spinach capons rosh hashana menu 2022

Ingredients:

  • 4 pounds chicken capons
  • 1 bag frozen spinach
  • 2 shallots, diced
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Defrost the spinach all the way and squeeze out all the excess liquid using either a cheesecloth or a paper towel. (When defrosting the spinach place it in a bowl, dish, or container to avoid the moisture getting everywhere).
  2. Heat some olive oil in a pan and add the shallots. Cook them for around five minutes or until they are soft and translucent. Add the drained spinach, salt, and minced garlic clove and mix well. Cook for a few minutes mixing everything well.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  4. Stuff the capons with the spinach mixture and place in a baking dish.
  5. Season them with salt and add the wine and broth to the dish.
  6. Bake for one hour on 375. Cover, lower the oven temperature to 300, and continue baking for another hour or until the chicken is really soft and the liquids have evaporated.


potato bourekas:

Potato bourekas

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack medium sized pastry squares (around 10 squares)
  • 4 gold potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt

Instructions:

  1. Defrost the puff pastry.
  2. Wash, peel, and cut the potatoes into chunks.
  3. Place the potatoes into a medium sized pot and cover them with water.
  4. Bring to a boil and then lower the flame a little bit.
  5. Cook the potatoes for around 40 minutes or until they are soft and can be easily sliced with a knife.
  6. Add the potatoes back to the pot and add the olive oil and salt.
  7. Mash everything really well until you have a smooth consistency.
  8. Preheat the oven to 380 degrees.
  9. Place the pastry squares on a lined baking sheet and spoon about two tablespoons of the mashed potato mixture onto each square. Close the bourekas by pulling one side of the dough over to the other side and pinching it down tightly.
  10. Whisk an egg in a bowl and brush over the bourekas.
  11. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the bourekas and bake for around 20 minutes or until the bourekas are golden.


purple cabbage salad:

Purple cabbage salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds shredded red cabbage
  • 6 scallions, chopped
  • 1/3 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/3 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions:

  1. Place the cabbage, scallions, cranberries, and pecans in a bowl.
  2. In a smaller bowl, mix the mayonnaise, honey, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
  3. Pour the dressing over the salad and mix well.
  4. Refrigerate overnight if you can. This makes the salad marinate in the dressing and it tastes better.


white rice:

White rice

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups water
  • 1.5 cups basmati rice

Instructions:

  • Rinse the rice to get rid of excess starch.
  • Place the water in a sauce pot and bring to a boil.
  • Add the rice and lower the flame.
  • Cook for around 15 minutes or until all of the water is absorbed.


Roasted Green beans:

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds green beans
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place green beans in a bowl and add the olive oil and all the spices.
  3. Mix everything really well and place on lined baking sheet.
  4. Roast for around 25 minutes.


Carrot Muffins:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 jars carrot baby food
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 teaspoons cinammon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup walnut halves (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl.
  • Beat the eggs and sugar in a separate bowl. Add the oil and baby food and mix.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until everything is combined well.
  • Bake for around 20 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  • Top with walnut halves if using.


Notes:

And that’s it! Everything can be stored in the fridge for around four days and can be frozen for around two months. Enjoy, and have a beautiful Yom Tov!
