Maple french toast

Double the maple syrup:

This recipe was inspired by my husband’s grandfather who used to put maple syrup INTO the egg mixture. Who would have thought? It usually gets poured over the toast, but I have to say this way is pretty genius! The French toast takes on a whole new level, and not to mention the house smells like a heavenly place while it’s cooking, after it’s cooked, and if we’re ever warming it up.

There’s always french TOAST…

One of the great things about French toast is that if you’re ever in a pinch you will usually have all the ingredients necessary to make it on hand! Most of us usually have eggs and bread around – add some oil or butter to a pan, sweeten them with something and you’re good to go!

Healthier french toast:

When I make French toast for my husband and when I make French toast for myself I make them quite differently! I eat what you would call “healthy French toast”. A few of the ways to make this healthier are:

  • Swap out the butter for olive oil – it will still be delicious!
  • Use healthy bread (I like Ezekiel bread or as you see in this recipe we used leftover Ezekiel English muffins.)
  • Drizzle a little bit of maple syrup over the toast when it’s ready instead of adding a lot to the egg mixture.
  • Add some cinnamon to the egg mixture for some extra flavor!

It will still be delicious if you make it healthier, it all depends on your preference.

Cook on a low flame to prevent it from burning:

One of the issues people have with French toast is that the outside gets browned before the inside is fully cooked. To avoid this, lower the heat after the first minute of cooking it. This way you get the outside to be fully browned but not burnt. Cook it on a low flame for longer if you want to make sure the eggs get fully cooked.

Alternatively, you can fry it until the outside seems ready and then pop them in the oven to finish cooking. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes on 350 degrees.

French Toast and Coffee

Different ways to enjoy French Toast:

  • Drizzle some honey or maple syrup on it.
  • Have it with a side of fruit.
  • Add some jam and cheese for a yummy sandwich.
  • Have it with some yogurt for extra protein.
  • Have it with a bowl of oatmeal or hot cereal for a super nutritious twist.
  • Don’t forget your favorite drink – coffee, orange juice, tea, or a smoothie!

What should I do with the extra egg mixture?

Is anybody else always left with some extra egg mixture?! And does anybody else not like to throw things out? Yep, that’s me!

Something I came up with to avoid throwing out the extra egg mixture is scrambling up the eggs in the same pan that the French toast was cooked in. Top your French toast with them or have them on the side. Or pop them in the fridge for the next day to have on a regular piece of bread. You can never go wrong with scrambled eggs!
